Mike Glazzy, from the Santa Clara County Chapter, volunteered to get the California State Department formed and chartered, a process now underway.
He was subsequently assigned the task by Louis Dechert, KWVA President, and Mike assumed the duty. http://www.kwva.org/homepage_stories/i_hp_bb_070125_dept_ca.htm
A website dedicated to the support of the new state department was decided to be in order.
When complete, the KWVA California State Department website will include, as a minimum, links to the:
- KWVA National Home Page: www.kwva.org and:
- California KWVA chapter websites, such as the Santa Clara County Chapter: http://www.ch6.dcakwva.org/
- Links to other sites of interest to all Veterans.
- Any idea that would help bring new members into local chapters in California, and thus into the National membership.
- Encouragement to chapters who might wish inclusion in the state department charter when issued, and members from those chapters who wish to serve as officers or volunteers.
Some questions you might have:
-
What is the mission of the California State Department? You can now find a draft of our Department Mission Statement at Department Mission Satement
-
All comments will be appreciated, all questions will hopefully be answered. We really are trying here to be as transparent about out efforts as possible.
-
What is the mission of any KWVA state department? See our Mission Statement.
-
Will our chapter lose anything, such as our identity, by joining the state department? It shouldn't.
-
If not, will we gain some advantage over those that do not participate? There should be the natural advantage of closer ties to fellow California Korean Veterans, their spouses, and their children. The basic idea is twofold: get to more Koran War vets, and extend our hand of welcome and help to the Korean Service folks. Many do not know of their sacrifice.
-
Will the department interfere with chapter programs? No. Absolutely not. But the Department may be able to help with them.
-
Will it cost anything from the chapters? We don't have a budget yet.
-
Does the National KWVA give the state department any financial support? If so, for what? We haven't asked yet, but we will. Look at our draft bylaws.
-
Your chapter is in the north of the state. Ours is in the south. Where would we meet for elections, etc? What do you think? We think teleconferencing may help solve that very real problem.
-
What can we give or do to help the California State Department? All ideas are welcome. Although our primary interest is in California chapters and their members, we could certainly benefit from the experience of other state departments.
Do you have more questions? Your opinion on what the answers are, or should be? Let's talk. We can and will use any help we can get. We are also interested in sharing ideas with other state department organizations.
We're not too proud to accept help, so don't be shy.

We are looking for a few good men (and if we are lucky, ladies, too). As you can see by the status over on the right, we recently received notice about the corporation charter filing. We are now required (by June 5) to submit a California form with the business office address, and names for CEO; Secretary, & Treasurer.
We also received our IRS (Internal Revenue Service) EIN (Employer Identification Number Number).
The boilerplate actions we've taken so far appear to us to be pretty much over. What we believe we need now are those who will step up as 'candidates for the interim.' The interim being the period in which we get the official submittal package to the KWVA ready. To do that, you need folks that want to contribute to; share in, and help build.
We sure hope we don't have the result of having an excellent party but having no one show up.
We have now completed a bylaws 2nd draft. Pretty soon there will be a need for folks to be elected, and to have a review, appropriate revisions, and approval of the bylaws.
Can't have a California State Department without the willing and the able to run it, and we are looking forward to working with you. We will soon be posting our thoughts and research on a biggie problem: meetings. How do we get together? California is a big state. We're looking into teleconferencing.
The Presidents of the following chapters have indicated that their chapters wish to support the creation of the Department:

Update for 25 April 2007
We're starting to get ideas and input about links to places of interest on the internet, so we're going to add a page here to store them in categorical order, so to speak. Those that make the 'final cut' will find a home somewhere on the finished website. To get the Links Page, go to The Links Page .
It will be updated as information is added, probably several times a week. You are invited to recommend additions.
